Integrity Fruit is a medium-sized company that packs and stores fresh fruit located in Ardmona in NE Victoria.
Integrity Fruit has a commitment to corporate social and environmental responsibility. With increasing utility prices putting pressure on competitiveness and Integrity Fruit was looking for ways to use resources more efficiently and save money.
With an annual energy use of 1.09 million kWh, Integrity Fruit was looking for ways to become more efficient and save money. Having an assessment conducted by a cold storage specialist was expected to help with business' ongoing plans for improvements.
In 2013 Sustainability Victoria provided funding for 50% of the cost of an energy assessment which looked at energy use in the fruit packing operations and cool storage. The assessment made five recommendations covering lighting upgrade, lighting sensors, climate control timers and rapid door entry for loading bays. The predicted energy savings from these measures was 22%, with an average payback period of 1.5 years.
'The process opened up pathways to information sources that will help us develop our long term plans for better management and design of our cold storage operations,' said Integrity Fruit CEO, Craig Boyce.
Following the assessment Integrity Fruit carried out a lighting upgrade replacing thirty 400w high bay lights with 200w induction lights reducing energy consumption by 162Gj per year, saving an estimated $5,600 and reducing greenhouse emissions by the equivalent of 53 tonnes of CO2.
Later Integrity Fruit expanded and redesigned its cool rooms and installed one automatic door which covers seven existing cool rooms. This has resulted in a 10% reduction in energy consumption saving a further $20,000 per year, as well as boosting storage space. Payback period for this measure is 1.5 years.
Integrity Fruit will be installing controllers on its compressors which will further improve energy efficiency and provide estimated savings of more than $2,000 per year.
When asked about what was one of the biggest benefits to come from this process, I would have to say it was a catalyst for change that has created momentum throughout all business operations, bringing efficiency gains to power usage, boosting recycling and productivity. It is also a good story to tell to people we sell to, both nationally and internationally.
